Nuclear Power Plants in India
Nuclear power is the fourth-largest (NPCIL) source of electricity in India after hydroelectric, thermal and renewable sources of electricity.
NPCIL is responsible for construction, design, operation and commissioning of nuclear power reactors. NPCIL is presently operating twenty two commercial nuclear power reactors with an installed 6780 MW capacity. The reactor fleet comprises 18 Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and two Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) and including one 100 MW PHWR at Rajasthan which is owned by DAE, Government of India and one 1000 Megha WhaMWhR reactor KKNPS-1.
Latest addition to the fleet is the unit-II of Kudankulam NP Station, a 1000 MW VVER (Pressurised Water Reactor type), which has started its commercial operation on March 31, 2017. Currently NPCIL has four reactors under various stages of construction totaling 2800 MW capacity
